

The Lord called him peacefully from this earthly life on the afternoon of July 15, 2015 into the perfect peace of Heaven. John W. Johnson, 83, was born on September 9, 1931 in Bienville, Louisiana to Eliza Quarles Johnson and Perry Columbus Johnson.
He graduated from Sumner High School in Kansas City, Kansas in 1948. He then enlisted into the United States Coast Guard until honorable discharge on September 21, 1949. He enlisted into the United States Navy, where he was placed on inactive duty in 1953 and honorably discharged on February 1, 1955. John worked at Armacost Pontiac, Inc. from 1954-1970, Central Chemical Company in from 1961-1970 and at BPU from April 1970 until retirement in December of 1994.
John was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Hazel Johnson and sister, Vertistine Johnson. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his children, Sharon Blackman, Theron, Gary, Ronald, Darrell and Reginald Johnson; brothers, Ivester and Thurman Johnson; sisters, Iva Cross and Ida Slaughter; 19 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren as well as a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
John was a member of the Olivet Institutional Baptist Church of Kansas City, Kansas, which he served on the Deacon Board for many years. He was also a member of the local VFW and the Masonic Lodge. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
A visitation will be held at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 North 94th Street, Kansas City, Kansas 66112 on Friday, July 24th from 10:00-11:00a.m. with the funeral service to follow at 11:00a.m. Interment will follow services at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
