John Edward Lawrence “Jack”, 73, passed away on February 9, 2021. Jack was a long-time resident of Kansas City, Kansas. He graduated from Rockhurst University with a bachelor’s in liberal arts and retired from AIG. Jack was a retired Captain from the Kansas Army National Guard.

Jack was a role model and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and sibling. He was a great father to his four children and a great figure to the extended family of nieces and nephews who lovingly called him “Apple Jack”. Jack had made an enduring mark on their lives. He loved history- Gettysburg, Sports- Notre Dame, and traveling. He and his wife Mary had visited all eight continents – he said, “it got pretty wet visiting Atlantis”. Jack absorbed and inhaled knowledge and was a natural born storyteller. He was known for his wit and always had something to say. He never met a stranger.

Jack is preceded in death by his daughter, Melissa Heflin; parents, John and Mary; and great grandson Rex Funez.

He is survived by his (soulmate) wife, Mary Lawrence; children, Anna M. (Christopher) Burge, Tina Louise (Roderick) Gonzales, and John E. Lawrence III; grandchildren, Johnny D., Kyle, John IV, Kimberly, Andrew, Amber, Allasandra, Arrianna, Anastasia; 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Ann Roepke; brothers, James, Robert, and Dennis; along with many other family members and friends.

Enjoyed playing boom beach with Brigadier Kane. He was truly a great military strategist. I loved his quotations by famous military commanders. He will be missed.

I am so sorry for your loss. I worked with Jack from 2004 until he retired. What a great story teller, co-worker and friend. Loved to listen about his travels, family and his knowledge of history. He will be missed.

The best grandpa and great grandpa you could ask for.

I cannot begin to express my sadness at the passing of Jack Lawrence, although I know it holds no comparison to the loss felt by those closest and dearest to him. . He attended nearly every one of the stomps I arranged, and long will I treasure the memories of our evenings at the Mine and our shared dinners at Gettysburg Eddies. He laughed easily, and shared without hesitation his history and experiences. Rest easily, my friend, and may the God you trusted gather you peacefully into his loving arms.
Mind how you go Jack, I'll see you around sometime.

Jack was a member of the Serra Club of Kansas City in Kansas seven years with 130 fellow Serrans. Jack was a man of wit and wisdom. I will miss him as a fun man to be with.
