

Kenneth Alvin Edwards, “Kenny”, 88, of Merriam, KS, passed July 24, 2012. Kenny's funeral service will be 11:00 Saturday, July 28 at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th Street, Kansas City, Kansas. Interment with Military Honors will follow in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Kenny was born June 25, 1924 in Herington, Kansas, the son of Walter and Viola (Schaffer) Edwards. He grew up in Herington and graduated high school. Marrying at age 18, Kenny was drafted into the U.S. Navy at 19. He was stationed in the Marshall and Gilbert Islands during World War II. After his discharge, Kenny worked for the Rock Island Railroad, working as a mechanic then as supervisor. The family moved to Kansas City in 1965, Kenny retired from Rock Island in 1986. He was a former member of the United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge in Herington. Kenny was a member of the V.F.W., a loyal Royals Fan and he loved to catch, relocate and release squirrels. He enjoyed woodworking, and could do almost anything mechanical, even making horse trailers. Kenny was a good family man.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Evelyn; brother: Harold; and granddaughter: Lisa. Survivors include his children: Lanny and wife Teresa of Basehor, Kansas; Maurice and wife Kathy of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; and Marsha Austin of Shawnee, Kansas; sister: Arlene Spivey of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; sister-in-law: Geri Walters of Newton, Kansas; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one on the way.
