Leonard Carl Hachinsky, a committed follower of Jesus Christ, was born 27 December 1934, in Kansas City, KS and passed away in his home in Kansas City, KS 4 December 2025. He was the son of Adolph and Lottie (Weber) Hachinsky, one of 7 siblings.
Leonard attended Park Elementary, Central Junior High, and Wyandotte High School. Leonard’s work ethic revealed itself early, and by age ten he was delivering newspapers early in the morning and after school. As a teenager, he worked in a local grocery store, followed by roles with National Bellas Hess, Quindaro Homes, General Motors, and CertainTeed until he was hired by the BPU where he retired after 23 ½ years.
He married at age 17 to Frances Lindsey, and they were blessed with six children. Leonard married Bertha Kleindolph in 1974 adding her two children to his family. Cordell was born in 1986. Leonard and Bertha also opened their home and hearts to ten foster children over the years, loving and caring for them as their own.
Looking for an adventure at age 53, Leonard, Bertha, and Cordell moved to Studley, Kansas to farm. After returning to Kansas City, he worked as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and on the maintenance team at Lake of the Forest.
When he was 63, although always a reluctant traveler and self-admitted homebody, he answered the call of the Holy Spirit to take his family to Indonesia where he and Bertha taught in a mission school. Leonard taught woodworking and worked on the facility maintenance team for three years.
His relationship with Jesus Christ was the foundation of Leonard’s life. Over his 90-plus years, he worshiped and served at several congregations, including St. Luke’s Lutheran, Grace Lutheran, and Wyandotte County Christian. His relationship with Jesus guided his decisions, his generosity, and the way he treated others. He could always be found reading his Bible in the evenings in his study, wearing his characteristic multiple layers of socks and coveralls.
A man of many talents, Leonard found joy in gardening, stained glass, woodworking, home remodeling, puzzles, and creating a number of concrete works of art in his backyard. If someone in the family needed something fixed, built, designed, or reimagined, he was eager to help. He delighted children with jokes, his magic ball trick, juggling, and telling stories with his puppet, Grover. No one embodied Dad jokes more. He could easily impress others with his ability to recite the alphabet and books of the Bible backwards.
Leonard is survived by his wife of 51 years, Bertha; his brother Leroy; his children David Hachinsky (Angie), Kevin Hachinsky (Leslie), Annette Hachinsky Stithem, Shaun Hachinsky (Denise), Shelby Kleindolph Williams (Perry), Kathy Hachinsky Pluff (Joe), Derek Kleindolph (Rain), Cordell Hachinsky (Whitney), and daughter-in-law Lisa. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Al, Norma, Vernon, Bob and Ronnie; his son, Brian Hachinsky; and his grandson, Justin Hachinsky. Leonard leaves behind a large and loving legacy: 30 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Leonard’s memory to Show-Me Christian Youth Home or Wyandotte County Christian Church.
A Memorial service will be held on 13 December, 2025 with visitation starting at 10:00 am and the service starting at 11:00 am at Wyandotte County Christian Church, 13700 Leavenworth Rd., Kansas City, KS 66109.
