Born to Clarissa (Evans) and Charles Carter, she grew up in Kansas City, KS. Martha graduated from Kansas State University and met many life-long friends in her sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma. She moved to Ft. Smith where she raised her family and then worked for Arkansas Extension Services, earned an advanced degree in home economics and loved precious time with her grandkids. She was an active member of Central Presbyterian Church and served in multiple roles including as elder and trustee. She also volunteered her talents with the Junior League and many other organizations in Ft. Smith.
Upon retirement Martha moved to Massachusetts and later moved to North Carolina to be near family. Her passion for travel, reading and scrabble, and her time with family never diminished. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and we miss her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her son-in-law, Allen. She is survived by her sister, Pat Young, and her children: David (Ellen), Sandra Smith and Michael (Carol), nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Chapel Hill Cemetery, 701 North 94th St, Kansas City, KS on June 16, 2025 at 11am with visitation at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in her name to Heifer International (www.heifer.org) or the Children’s Cancer Research Fund (www.childrenscancer.org)
