

Omer Stanton Kent, 99, of Kansas City, Kansas passed on May 28, 2021 at Riverbend Post-Acute Rehabilitation. A visitation will be Wednesday, June 9, 2021 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 North 94th Street, Kansas City, Kansas 66112. A graveside service will be 12:30 pm on Thursday, June 10, 2021 at Leavenworth National Cemetery, 150 Muncie Road, Leavenworth, Kansas 66048. Omer was born on June 22, 1921 in Golden City, Missouri to Henry Harold and Freda Mae (John) Kent. He graduated from Golden City High School and enlisted for six years in the US Navy in 1940. While aboard the USS Arkansas he travel many miles, both in the Atlantic and Pacific war zones. He participated in the battles of D-Day in Normandy and in Southern France. After VE Day, the Arkansas moved to the Pacific and there participated in the battles in those islands. After VJ Day, he accompanied the Arkansas to the island of Bikini for the atomic tests, where the Arkansas was finally sunk. He was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of Chief Watertender.
Omer met his future wife, Molly, on a train when he was returning from leave while the Arkansas was in port in New York. Molly was employed by the US Signal Corps, working in the Pentagon Building, Washington D.C, and was also returning from leave. They married in 1944 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma and both returned to their respective jobs.
Omer was preceded in death by his wife of 76 years, Ruth Molly Kent in July of 2020; his son, John Dennis Kent in 1988; his parents; and his brother, Orville Arthur Kent.
He is survived by his daughters, Peggy Eileen Kent of Kansas City, Missouri and Betty Jane Wells of Denver, Colorado; and four grandchildren.
After Omer’s discharge from the US Navy, he was employed by the Phillips Petroleum Company in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. He was transferred to Kansas City, Kansas in 1949 and retired from Phillips Petroleum after have working for them for more than 35 years.
Omer enjoyed playing golf, going bowling, and attending concert night with Molly at Frontier Steakhouse. Omer was a former member of Central Christian Church, Sunset Hills Christian Church, and the Trinity United Methodist Church. He was also a member of VFW Post No. 5851 and a volunteer at the Kansas City, Kansas Food Kitchen. Omer was loved by so many and touched many lives in his 99 years. He will be dearly missed.
