

Richard K. “Dick” Lyon, 93, of Shawnee, passed away August 5, 2015. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 12th at Queen of the Holy Rosary, 7023 W 71st St., Overland Park, KS 66204. Friends may call from 9:00-10:00 a.m. preceding the service at the Church. Private interment will follow in Leavenworth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Queen of the Holy Rosary Church, 7023 W 71st St., Overland Park, KS 66204 or Crossroads Hospice, 11150 Thompson Ave., Lenexa, KS 66219.
Dick was born April 18, 1922 to Elizabeth (Crane) and Ted Lyon in KCK. He lived his entire life in KCK. Dick graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1940 and then attended KCK Junior College. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and served aboard the U.S.S. Bennington Aircraft Carrier CV20 as a plane captain of F-6-Fs during World War II. After the war, he went to work for T.W.A., where he worked for 39 years. After retirement, he taught sheet metal classes at Maple Woods Community College for four years. Dick was member of Queen of the Holy Rosary Church, T.W.A. Seniors, and a member of the American Legion, Post 370.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Elizabeth Lyon; his son, Richard Lyon, Jr.; his sister, Betty Nikles Freeman; and his son-in-law, Charles F. Swedo, Jr.
Dick is survived by his wife of 71 years, Margaret Lyon of the home; two children, Ted Lyon and Sandra Swedo; three grandchildren, Dana Bernal and her husband Ed, Richard Swedo, and Kristen Myers and her husband Josh; four great grandchildren, Hannah and Brady Swedo, Seth and Gage Bernal; as well as many friends and family.
