Richard William Painter, 82 of Overland Park, KS passed away on June 17, 2026 after a long illness. Richard was born May 18,1944 in Kansas City, Kansas to Clarence and Hazel (Walls) Painter. Richard met his wife Doris and while building a barn they dated and married on January 30, 1970. They raised two children, Craig Painter and Heather Painter.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Hazel, his wife, Doris in 2018 and his brother, Jim Painter.
He is survived by his sister, Catherine Mantooth and grandchildren, Alex, Rebecka and Allison.
Richard worked for TWA as a mechanic for 36 years and American Airlines as a ramp worker and handled hazard materials for the unit until he retired.
Richard was a proud American and served in the US Navy. He was assigned to the USS Oriskany a Essex class aircraft carrier as a fire chief during the VietNam war. He was always involved in the reunion of the sailors through the years. Everyone would look forward to seeing Richard as he always brought shirts, caps and other memorabilia celebrating the USS Oriskany.
VFW was one of his favorite haunts. He loved it there. Richard made lots of friends. A place that was busy. A place where you could find lots of people who cared about you and you cared about them. Plenty of work but plenty of fun.
Baseball was one of his passions. He collected baseball cards along with various other items. He enjoyed going to baseball games. It didn’t matter at what level-neighborhood, high school, minor, major-our Royals. He loved them all.
Disneyland. Now that was the place to go. Every year for many years Richard and Doris would pack up the kids and go to Disneyland. They enjoyed it all. After the kids grew up they would sometimes get in the car and just drive down south or east or wherever. Richard liked driving and Doris liked all the flowers and scenery.
One thing about Richard you couldn’t go anyplace that he didn’t know someone. Conversation and a smile. You got to love his stories.
Family and friends are invited to share condolences and memories on his guestbook page.
