Sydney Watson Sr. was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma on July 27, 1939, to the union of Henry and Douglas Mary Watson. Sydney was the eighth of ten siblings. He was proceeded in death by his wife of 56 years Rosetta Watson and his only son Sydney Watson Jr.. He is survived by his only daughter of Yolanda McKinney—husband, Carl E. McKinney Jr.—five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Though born in Oklahoma, Sydney was raised and lived in Kansas City, Kansas (Wyandotte County) in the Watson family home on 98th and Haskell. Sydney was baptized at the age of 11 years old at Oak Ridge Baptist Church by the late Reverend Alexander. He attended and was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Edwardsville, Kansas of which his mother was one of the founders.
Sydney attended White Church elementary and Washington high school, where he graduated in 1957. Sydney was employed with General Motors in Fairfax for 32 years from 1961 through 1993. At the time of his retirement Sydney worked on the Carol Line in the Chassis Department. During the time of his employ and well into retirement, he remained a committed member of the UAW Local 31.
Sydney Watson will be laid to rest on April 27, 2024, at The New Bethel Church located at 745 Walker Ave. Kansas City, Kansas 66104. Visitation will be from 9am to 11am with service at 11am.
