Always a hardworking man, he grew up helping his grandpa in his butcher shop. It was there he learned the value of hard work and eventually worked his way up to become an exceptional printing ink salesman. His work took him to many places where his customers quickly became friends as they learned how he would go above and beyond for them.
In 1968, he married the love of his life, Mary Ann Grzybowski (2019) in Kansas City. They made their life together in Kansas City with their two children, Tom, and Susan. He served as president of the Craftsman Club for two years and holds an honorary degree from Pittsburg State University. Papa Tom enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and caring for his dogs. He could often be found cheering in the endzone at a high school football game or watching another sport such as baseball or wrestling. He enjoyed grilling steaks that would later be sampled by his grandsons, caring for his various dog friends over the years and reminiscing over the adventures in his life with his loved ones. Anyone who was lucky enough to know Tom will remember him as someone that was caring, hardworking, and at times, mischievous.
His memory will continue to be cherished by his mother Jo-Ann Swanson, his children, Tom (Holly) McClain of Plattsburg, MO, and Susan (Casey) Jones of Paola, KS, his brothers Jack (Kim) McClain, John McClain, and Danny (Debra) McClain, five grandchildren, Sarah Jones, Dylan (Miranda) McClain, Blake McClain, Ellen Jones and Jennifer Jones, as well as numerous other family and countless friends.
A visitation for Thomas will be held Saturday, February 3, 2024 from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM at Chapel Hill - Butler Funeral Home, 701 North 94th Street, Kansas City, Kansas 66112, followed by a memorial service at 1:30 PM.
