Thomas “Tom” Spehar, 86, of Kansas City, KS passed away September 21, 2012 at Providence Medical Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 25 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1086 N. 94th St., KCK. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Monday, September 24 at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th St., KCK, with a Rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Interment with Military Honors will follow the Mass at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Tom was born December 10, 1925 in Kansas City, Kansas to Thomas P. and Pauline Spehar. A lifelong Kansas City area resident, he graduated from Bishop Ward High School, where he played basketball and track. After some college, Tom joined the Marines, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific campaign and China during World War II. After his military service, Tom married Betty Eskina in 1951. He worked for Owens Corning Fiberglas for over 35 years, retiring in 1985. Tom was an avid golfer and sports fan - he enjoyed the Royals, Chiefs and all KS college sports. He enjoyed bowling and he played softball until he was in his 50s. Tom was a loving family man and a good caretaker
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom P. and Pauline as well as two sisters, Olga Carroll and Anne Spehar.
Tom is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Eskina-Spehar, of the home; four children, Patty Kearn and husband Bob of Lenexa, KS, Donna Rector and husband Dave of North Kansas City, MO, Gary Spehar of Lawrence, KS and Anita Knese and husband Steven of Kearney, MO; nine grandchildren, Marci Richter and husband James, Rusty Kearn and fiancé Jenny, Stephanie McCleary and husband Randy, Alan Rector, Angela Marshall and husband Jesse, Alex Spehar and wife Liz, Andrew Spehar, Anthony Knese and Cheyenne Knese; 8 great grandchildren, Aubrey, Cassidy, Elizabeth, Cameron, Matthew, Zachary, Damian and Calliope as well as many other family members and friends.
