Alvin Junior Albin entered into eternal life at his home, surrounded by family, on November 6, 2010. He was born September 1, 1925, to Christina and Clarence Albin in Saffordville, KS. AJ is a World War II veteran. In 1943, when AJ was 18, he enlisted in the Army and served in the European theater with the 83rd Anti-tank Division. For his service he received the Purple Heart and 5 battle stars. When he came home after his military service, he received his LPN license and worked at the Topeka VA hospital. There he met the love of his life, Marian Dunn. In 1951, AJ heard of a new company starting up in Kansas City called Trans World Airlines, so he gathered up his family and came to KC where he got a job with TWA. He worked for TWA as an aircraft mechanic for 32 years before retiring in 1984. AJ was a member of the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers Union Local 1650. AJ was a disciplined man who earned respect for his extraordinary work ethic and caring nature. He will be remembered for his shy quiet nature, generosity, teasing sense of humor, and love for his family and friends. He worked very hard all of his life never giving much thought to himself. If there was a job to be done, he was there to tackle it with a sledge hammer in hand and usually a bump or cut on his head and hands. There was a time when he worked three jobs so that Marian could be at home with his daughters. He spent countless hours working in his garden and always had an abundance of tomatoes that he shared with the neighborhood, the doctor's office and Marian's hair salon as well as all of the family. He was a master of repairs and could remedy almost any household or car malfunction. AJ never stopped until the last week of his life. He visited the Hometown Buffet everyday for his noon time meal and just loved all of the ladies who worked at the restaurant. It was his joy to go for lunch and get hugs from his girls. AJ read the newspaper every day, loved to work outside in his vegetable garden and rebuild cars. He was a member of the Hudson car club and he and Marian attended several Hudson meets.
AJ will be remembered most of all for the kind of man he was and the principled life he lived. He gratefully lived each day to its fullest, always staying busy. He was motivated, industrious, and energetic. He taught by example his values of hard work and commitment. His life was a testament to the virtues of honesty, integrity, and self-reliance. He was a perfectionist, believing "if you were going to do something, do it right." AJ was a simple, yet remarkable man, beloved and respected by all who knew him. His "girls" were blessed to have a truly exceptional father. He led a Christian life and was a member of the North Kansas City First Presbyterian Church. The family would like to thank Northcare Hospice for their care and support through his final days. AJ will be missed more than we can express, his memory cherished and his life celebrated.
AJ is survived by his loving dog, Missy; sister Jane Kreitzer of Topeka, KS; daughter, Patti Albin of Topeka KS, (Rob); daughter Nancy Bauman of Gladstone, MO; daughter Cheryl Messenger (Lee) of Kansas City, MO; and daughter, Kathie Hall (Mark) of Kansas City, MO; five grandsons, Mike, Chris, Brian, Aaron and Michael; two granddaughters Shelly and Lyndsay and seven great grandchildren.
