Anastasia “Stacie” (McNellis) Durkin, 78, of Kansas City, died May 31, 2026. Born November 17, 1947, Stacie was the daughter of Maurice Maltby McNellis and Ethel Margaret (Schild) McNellis and the oldest of eight children.
Stacie was an extraordinary woman who was blessed with the gift of laughter and optimism. She lived a life with faith in the Resurrection and a deep devotion to The Blessed Mother. Her early foundation was shaped through her education at Visitation Catholic School, followed by graduation from Saint Teresa's Academy in 1966. She received her nursing degree from Research Medical Center School of Nursing and continued learning throughout her life, ultimately earning an MBA from Drury University.
Over the years, Stacie worked across many areas of nursing, including maternity care, ICU, and burn unit, among others. Early in her career, she developed a deep commitment to making essential maternity care accessible to young mothers in rural Southwest Missouri, at a time when infant mortality rates were rising among high-risk populations.
After stepping away from direct patient care, she earned an Associate Degree in Health Information Technology and joined the Information Services Department at Mercy Health System in Springfield, Missouri. She later transitioned into consulting in health information management and went on to found Velocity Health Informatics. Through her work, she helped healthcare organizations safeguard patient information during the transformative shift from paper records to digital systems. In a period of significant change, Stacie played an important role in protecting the privacy, trust, and dignity of countless patients.
Her life of service extended beyond work. Stacie was a member of several organizations in health information management, including HIMSS, AHIMA, and MOHIMA. She also held several offices and leadership roles over the years. Above all, her faith remained central; she was deeply involved with her church, Saint Gabriel the Archangel Parish, Alter Society as well as The Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, where she held the officer title of President for the Padraig Pearce Kansas City Division I Chapter and had been a member since 2013.
Stacie’s proudest accomplishments were her four children: Erin Carver (Brent), Katie Durkin, Bridget Capilitan (Shaun), Patrick Joseph Durkin (Lauren), followed by her beloved grandchildren Clara Carver, Kai and Beckett Capilitan, and Isabelle and Charlie Durkin. She devoted her life to being a loving, kind, and patient mother. She made it known to all that early on in motherhood, she entrusted her children to The Blessed Mother’s maternal care, asking for her protection and guiding them closer to Jesus.
Stacie was preceded in death by her parents and brother, James McNellis.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and siblings: Meg Flanagan (Terry), Kathleen Koeing (Bob), Patrick McNellis (Jill), Bridget Harville, Christine Burke (Jerry), and Janice O’Brien.
