Antonia Arredondo Ortiz, 98, passed away peacefully at home on March 12, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Antonia was born on February 6, 1927, to Maria De Jesus Guerra and Domingo Arredondo in Kansas City, Missouri.
Antonia’s joy in her early years was dancing and singing and that joy continued to flourish throughout the years. In her early twenties, Antonia created a strong sense of community and cultural pride as she directed the programs for the Mexican Fiestas. She was responsible for teaching all participants the traditional dances and made most of the costumes with her mother Maria de Jesus. In 1950, Antonia was invited to be part of a month-long historical revue called “Thrills of a Century!” to celebrate Kansas City’s 100th birthday. The revue was held at a newly built theater in Swope Park called Starlight Theater. Antonia choreographed the Mexican American dances and selected the dancers from all areas of Kansas City including Guadalupe, Armourdale and Argentine. This was a significant milestone for Antonia because she was the first Mexican American to choreograph dances at Starlight Theater and bring her unique perspective to the stage. Antonia’s journey in the performing arts is a beautiful testament to her passion and dedication to her culture.
Antonia's spirit and zest for life were truly inspiring! Her ability to embrace happiness and adventure, even later in life, reflects an incredible attitude and love for her family. Antonia loved to go on family trips and dedicated time to explore both Europe and most of the United States. Antonia loved to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and special occasions with her family, and she was always willing to try new things. At the age of 78, Antonia rode a mechanical bull at her goddaughters 21st birthday. At 88 during a cruise to the Caribbean, Antonia joined a dancing conga line for a tequila shot. At 90, Antonia attended her granddaughter’s college graduation in St. Louis and ended up dancing center stage between two dueling pianos. The family always joked that Antonia had a big case of FOMO (fear of missing out), but these examples paint a vivid picture of her lively personality and passion for creating memorable experiences with her loved ones.
Some of Antonia’s words of wisdom:
Always eat something sweet, so you don’t become a sourpuss!
Thank God for your blessings!
Never pass up a bathroom!
Love your family, always love your family!
Antonia was known for her ability to see the best in all that life had to offer and for her big, beautiful smile which guided others on the days life decided to be less cooperative. She loved singing, dancing, having a drink or two, and watching her family and friends share their love for one another, a love that was made all the more possible and full because of her. Her love for her family was without limits and will forever hold a place in her family’s hearts.
Antonia was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Roberto Ortiz, who has been patiently waiting for her heavenly arrival; her parents, her brother Celso Arredondo and his wife Mary Arredondo and sister-in-law Kathryn Castro. She is survived by 6 children, Dcn. Roberto Ortiz Jr. (Diane), Gloria Fisher, Dr. Richard Ortiz (Evan), Roger Ortiz (Lauri), Ray Ortiz (Sarah) and Toni-Ann Ortiz (Lori); sisters-in-law, Stella Ojeda, Margaret Abarca, Sylvia Ridings; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren who were her pride and joy; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Antonia's family expresses profound gratitude to the Sisters Servants of Mary, who devoted many nights to vigil and prayer during her transition to Heaven, with special acknowledgment to Sr. Germana.
