Arie Van Ryn, age 83, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on January 13, 2011. Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m. followed by funeral service on Monday, January 17, at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road. Inurnment in Mt. Moriah Cemetery South. Memorial contributions may be made to the Department of Kansas V.F.W., P.O. Box 1008, Topeka, Kansas 66601-1008. Mr. Van Ryn was born on November 19, 1927 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He was the son of Arie Van Ryn, Sr. and Elizabeth Johanna Hage-Van Ryn. He immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1947, was drafted into the U.S. Army in October 1950, served in Korea, was captured by the Chinese Army in April 1951 and released in August 1953. He married Maartje Cornelia Van Hulst on February 10th, 1956. Under the G.I. Bill, he attended St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, NJ and graduated with a BA in Business Administration. He was Past Master of a Masonic Lodge in Hoboken, New Jersey. Mr. Van Ryn worked for Employers Reinsurance Corp. of Overland Park, Kansas in the International Dept. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Maartje “Mary” Van Ryn; sons Lawrence Van Ryn and Gregory Van Ryn and his girlfriend Allison; daughter Stephanie Smith and her husband Douglas; six grandchildren Brandon, Jonathan, Jeremy, Rebekah, Josiah and Hannah; and one great-granddaughter Mya.
