Arnold John Alpers, 92, Kansas City, MO, passed away September 1, 2013 at St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, September 5th at the McGilley Antioch Chapel with a visitation beginning at 10:00 AM. Graveside services will be 2:30 PM Thursday at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Corder, MO.
Arnold was born June 7, 1921 in Higginsville, MO and grew up in Alma, MO. He was a U.S. Navy pilot in World War II and flew several combat missions in Corsair and Hellcat fighter planes. He returned from the war to farm with his father in Corder, MO. In 1947 he married Winiford M. Gifford, and for 7 years they lived in Corder before moving to Kansas City in 1954. Arnold was a superintendent for Bolling Builders until he retired in 1986. Arnold and Winiford were faithful members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church where Arnold served as a Church Trustee. They followed their children’s sporting events and both loved to fish. Arnold especially enjoyed walking the shoreline to find and restore fishing lures. He was also a very ingenious inventor and greatly enjoyed fixing things and passing this gift on to others. Arnold was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be missed by all. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Winiford on June 3, 2013, and also his sisters, Evelyn Crick and Alice Showengerdt, as well as a brother, Dale Alpers.
Survivors include 2 sons, Lynn Alpers, Bozeman, MT; Les (Janifer) Alpers, Blue Springs, MO and daughter, Ann (Bill) Stokes, Camden Point, MO; brother, Wesley Alpers; 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Contributions are suggested to Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
