

Mrs. Arthie Mae Hill; born December 14, 1924, in Kansas City, KS, to Mrs. Harriet Washington Carter of Kansas City, MO, and Mr. Arthur Carter of Poplar Bluff, MO. Both parents, a brother, Joseph Carter, sister, Alice Carter, and husband, Clarence Hill, pre-deceased her. She spent her very early years in Poplar Bluff, MO, and Pasadena, CA, until the family moved to Kansas City, MO., where she attended Wendell Phillips Grade School, RT Coles, and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1942. She was married to her high school sweetheart, Clarence Hill, in 1944 and they were married until his death in March 2003. Mrs. Hill was active in the PTA and school events at Booker T. Washington Elementary, D.A. Holmes, S.B. Ladd, and Central High School where her daughters attended. She was active in the community through her work as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, neighborhood association, and St. Margaret's Guild at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church. She was active in Jack and Jill, Inc. and founding member of Club Impromptu. During the early 60's, Mrs. Hill participated in marches and related protest activities related to the demand for access to public accommodations. She managed the family home for many years until she made the decision to enter the workforce. She was employed 20 years in a supervisory position at Western Electric and retired in 1984. She spent her retirement years collecting cookbooks, trying new recipes, attending church services, travelling and reading her vast collection of romance novels. She cared for her mother, Harriet Smith, in her home during her mother’s later years and was an unfailing emotional and physical support to her husband during his long illness. Mrs. Hill sold her home in Sheraton Estates in 2009 and moved into the Breakers, a north-side Chicago senior lifestyle facility, near her daughter, Debrah Hill Jefferson, where she participated in center activities. She leaves to cherish her memory and to recall her many acts of kindness her daughters: Dr. Debrah Hill Jefferson (Dr. Nickey), Chicago; Peggye Hill Mezile (Harold) Edina, MN; granddaughters: Rheyna Mezile Malloy (Jamal), Lawrenceville, GA; Elana Mezile Glover (Taye) Laurel, Maryland; Tamara Jefferson Harris (Kevin) Dardenne Prairie, MO; great-grandchildren; Morgan Mezile; Kathleen and Kyle Harris; cousins Margo (James) Watson, plus cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends in Kansas City and Chicago. Services to be held, Monday, August 1, 2011at Mt. Moriah and Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Rd; Kansas City, MO., visitation begins at 10 a.m., and Chapel Service at 11 a.m. with entombment immediately following in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
