A lifelong resident of the Kansas City area, Arthur loved his country, community, family, friends, all animals - particularly horses and dogs - and was loved in return.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, December 20 at 10 a.m. at the New Reform Temple, 7100 Main Street, Kansas City, Missouri.
Arthur was president of Western Water Management, a family-owned company specializing in keeping municipal and industrial water pure and safe. It remained in the family for more than 70 years, until Arthur retired when the company was sold in 1995.
He graduated from Southwest High School in 1947 and received a Master of Economics from Washington University in St. Louis in 1952. The next year, he was drafted for the Korean War and served as a division personnel officer in the 45th Infantry (Thunderbird) Division. He then worked with Korean Civil Assistance Command and was discharged in December 1954.
Arthur was a founding member of the New Reform Temple, serving as a board member and as its second president. He was active on the boards of Menorah Hospital, the Jewish Federation, the Mission Valley Hunt and Heartland Therapeutic Riding. He continued his love of horses and riding until April of this year - although earlier he gave up jumping over fences.
Arthur was predeceased by his father and mother, Arthur Jacob and Muriel Stern, and his sister, Elizabeth Snur. Survivors include Barbara, his wife of 62 years; children Kathryn and Paul Ceja of Washington, DC, Brenda and Kerry Bush of Westwood, KS, and David Stern and Yana Yakob of Kiev, Ukraine; and grandchildren Jason and Hannah Ceja and Morgan and Caro Bush. He leaves a niece, two nephews, and many cousins across the country.
Above all, Arthur leaves a legacy of kindness and integrity. Donations in his memory may be sent to the Richard and Annette Bloch Cancer Care Pavilion fund at The University of Kansas Cancer Center, 2330 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Suite 305, Westwood, KS 66205.
The family wishes to thank Drs. Prakash Neupane and Sajjad Bhatti; Arthur’s nurses; and the entire cancer center staff for their compassionate, professional care.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.mtmoriah.net for the Stern family.
