Ashley Renee Cooke, age 37, left our world on Saturday, June 6, 2020, in Kansas City, Missouri. She was born in Overland Park, Kansas and is the daughter of Barney (Bernard) and Susan Cooke. She was a 2001 graduate of St. Teresa’s Academy. After graduating from the University of Kansas in 2005, Ashley lived in Phoenix, Arizona for six years and returned to Kansas City in 2012.

Ashley’s smile would light up a room. She was a loyal and loving friend to many. Ashley suffered from bipolar disorder and struggled for many years with its emotional highs and lows, but this illness didn’t take away her ability to bring everyone joy and happiness. Those that knew her well know that when given a choice, her first choice was fun, and she liked to make sure everyone else was having fun too. But above all else, Ashley was kind. Everyone who knew Ashley will miss her.

Ashley loved animals, especially Boston terriers. She volunteered with a rescue organization and adopted four dogs of her own. She was an avid sports fan (Rock Chalk), Kansas City Marathon finisher and loved singing karaoke with her dad. Ashley and her mother enjoyed many evenings sharing a meal and watching shows together.

She is preceded in death by her paternal grandparents John and Dorothy Cooke, her maternal grandparents Robert and Nina Dredge, and her beloved Boston terrier, Benton. She is survived by her parents, Barney and Susan Cooke, her sister, Kristen Cooke (Richard Haas), aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

Ashley’s family will greet friends on Tuesday, Tuesday, June 16 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, MO. Face coverings/masks required. A private funeral service will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on Wednesday, June 17, 2020.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ashley’s name to MidAmerica Boston Terrier Rescue (MABTR) at luckypawpals@aol.com or via phone at (402) 510-1346 or the National Alliance on Mental Illness Johnson County, KS (NAMI Joco) at www.namijoco.org or by mail at P.O. Ashley and I went to high school together, but we grew closest in college. Rock Chalk! Ashley was the friend who would always make me laugh with her big bright beautiful smile, her sharp wit and her sarcasm. She always made me feel special and loved as she did with everyone she came into contact with. Post college, Ashley made it a point to keep in touch despite living thousands of miles away. She always called and she always showed up. She was a loyal and dear friend and she will hold a special place in my heart. Ashley - I love you friend 💜 - never stop smiling. In the words of Kacey Musgraves, “........there’s always been a rainbow hanging over your head.”

I have a lifetime of memories with Ashley and I will treasure them always. Some of the best of them were at the beach down in Gulf Shores, Alabama, where Ashley and I became close friends. We grew up together down there and would hang out for days on end, swimming, lying on rafts, trying to escape jellyfish, burying each other in the sand. We traded books and played countless games of Gin. When we turned 21, we loved singing karaoke at the Pink Pony with each other and our families.

I miss Ashley and I always will. Barney, Susan, and Kristen, I send you love and I wish you the strength to navigate your grief and to carry on.

Sending love and wishes for peace and comfort to Barney, Susan, Kristen and all who hold Ashley in their hearts!

So many loving memories of Ashley! At the beach, playing in the ocean and the sand with Frank and Sam. Watching her daddy bury her up to her neck in the sand. She loved that. The year we drove the kids to Colorado for a ski trip. Did Barney bury her in the snow? I honestly can’t remember, but probably. Dinner with the families, including the dogs.

I could always count on a loving hug, more than one usually whenever I saw her.

Ashley, you are so loved and will always have a special place in the heart of those you loved and those who loved you.

I have so many great memories of Ashley through living with her on Vail way in Lawrence. She was always positive and smiling and looking to have a fun time. She sincerely cared about people and I will never forget her and will love her forever. My most sincere condolences Susan, Bernie, and family.

Deepest sympathy at the loss of your daughter and sister.
We will never forget Ashley’s grins and smiles, and the sleepovers. But mostly we will remember the grade school baseball memories when we would bring Ashley and Kaitlyn with Caroline and I to the ballpark and introduce her to autograph seeking at the stadium. And the photo I took of the three of them with Len Dawson. What a cute trio!
About a year or two ago, I was leaving B&BW and Ashley stopped me and reintroduced herself and mentioned those early baseball days. That was the last time we saw each other, but I so appreciated Ashley stopping me to give me a hug 🤗
Sending her family peace and comfort.
We are here for you. 💔
