Barry Wayne Sellmeyer, 73, of Belton, Missouri passed away peacefully on November 18, 2022 at Carnegie Village with his son Carl by his side. Barry was born on August 16, 1949 to John and Greta Sellmeyer in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1967, he graduated from Ruskin High School and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Barry proudly served aboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea CV 43 from 1969-1970 and was assigned to the VF 151 Fighter Squadron. He was a maintenance technician on F4B Phantoms Aircrafts, and specialized in Power Plants and Airframes. He proudly served during the Vietnam War during his time in the Navy. After active duty he served in the Naval Reserve Unit until April 7, 1973.
Barry worked as a pipefitter for Local Union No.533 from 1972 to 2006. He started as an apprentice in 1972 and was a member of Local Union No. 533 up until his death. Barry worked on heating and cooling equipment for many commercial and apartment buildings in and around the Kansas City area.
Barry was united in marriage to Sharon Kay Brandes in Grandview, Missouri at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on May 22, 1971. They welcomed their only son Carl Sellmeyer on July 6, 1977.
Barry became a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in the mid 80’s where he served on the Stephan Ministry and Seasoned Saints, helped with the heating and cooling at Bethlehem, and any other items the church needed. He attended midweek bible classes. He also purchased toilet paper for many local charities and ensured that the West would always win in the church competition.
He was an avid classic car enthusiast. He loved to go find classic cars at auctions and salvage yards. He loved to attend car shows all over the Kansas City area, Michigan, and California. Barry enjoyed hunting, fishing, and target shooting. He also enjoyed going to concerts and movies. Barry enjoyed the outdoors the most when he got the chance to visit the Sellmeyer family farm with his loved ones. Barry also enjoyed conversing with people for however long you allowed him to talk!
Barry is survived by his wife Sharon of the home, and his son Carl Sellmeyer (Amy) of Raymore, Missouri. Grandchildren Emma, Addison, and John Sellmeyer. Brothers Lee (Wanda) Sellmeyer of Granger, Iowa, Deryl (Gayle) Sellmeyer of Spring Hill, Tennessee, and Charles (Mary) Sellmeyer of Raymore, Missouri. Brother in-law Neil (Verlene) Brandes of Belton, Missouri and a sister in-law Jerri Brandes of Pleasant Hill, Missouri. Along with 11 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Greta Sellmeyer, his nephew Scott Sellmeyer, niece Michelle Walters, and his brother in-law Don Brandes.
