Basil was born in Vavouri, Epirus, Greece, on April 10, 1931. Good luck followed Dad throughout his life. His family successfully evaded the invading and occupying forces of the Italian and German military during World War II, including a bombing of the house next door, and then coping with the civil war following World War II. And then, after making the courageous decision to emigrate to America, the ship he traveled on sank on its next trip across the Atlantic. He married Helen P. Anthony of Droushia, Paphos, Cyprus in 1953, after meeting her at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Kansas City, MO. Now that’s good luck.
He retired from Armco Steel Corporation, after working there 31 years. He enjoyed traveling, especially when he traveled back to Greece to visit familiar places from his childhood as well as reconnecting with his relatives. He was an avid reader and could get lost for hours in anything that could be read, with favorite subjects being philosophy and history. And he also loved old movies and would watch classics of the 40s and 50s over and over again.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dimitrios and Evanthia Tsouyopoulos and sister Nikki.
He is survived by his wife Helen, daughter Virginia (Tom), and two sons, Dimitrios “Jim” (Angela) and Chris, and two grandchildren, Alexander and Arianna. He also leaves behind his brother Sotiri, nephews George and Constantine, and niece Evanthia in Greece.
