After graduation from De La Salle Military Academy, Bernie attended St. Mary’s College in Winona, Minnesota. He returned to Kansas City, where he worked managing several country clubs and the convention facilities of Kansas City Municipal Airport. He later moved his family to Wisconsin where he took over the family food brokerage business, eventually retiring to Kansas City. Probably more than anything else, he was known for his kindness to children, always having a pocketful of Dum Dums and a friendly smile.
Bernie is survived by his wife of fifty years, Margaret (Peggy); sons Topher of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Jay (Kathy) of Henderson, Nevada, and Dan (Elizabeth) of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren Alex, Ben, William, Zari, and Stephanie; brother John and sister Mary Kay of East Troy, Wisconsin; and countless friends.
An informal memorial will be held Saturday, May 6, 2017, at Kill Creek Park, Pavilion 2, at 11670 S. Homestead Lane, Olathe, Kansas, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Arrangements under the direction of Mt Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, Kansas City, MO.
