Bruce Alan Boomer, 70, of Prairie Village, Kansas passed away January 4, 2024 after a sudden but mighty two-month battle with cancer. He was surrounded by love as he moved on to his next great adventure.
Bruce was born October 13, 1953 in Clarksburg, West Virginia, where a childhood love of science led him to Georgia Tech, from which he graduated in 1975 with a BS in Applied Biology. Following bike trips across both the US and Europe, Bruce continued his studies at the University of West Virginia, graduating in 1980 with a Masters in Engineering. Soon after he found himself moving west to Kansas City, taking his first job as an environmental engineer, a career he would continue across multiple companies, most recently Black & Veatch. He retired in 2020.
Bruce met his future wife Margaret on a ski trip in January 1982. Their instant connection was undeniable, and they married in October that same year. In 1984 they would buy their still-current home in Prairie Village. In 1986 they welcomed their son Ross, and in 1989 they welcomed their daughter Karen.
Bruce will be remembered for his enthusiasm to travel the world, passion for music, and unrelenting appetite for baked goods (which he made up for with an equally unrelenting obsession with cycling). More importantly, though, Bruce will be remembered for his unceasing kindness as a neighbor, his devotion to improving his community, and his unconditional love for his family.
Bruce is survived by his wife of 41 years Margaret Boomer (née Knowles), son Ross Boomer, daughter Karen Clarke, grandchildren Henry and Daisy Clarke, sons-in-law Felipe Lenz and Charles Clarke, and sister Lisa Burnell. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents John and Shirley Boomer.
A celebration of Bruce’s life will take place at the Village Presbyterian Church located at 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kansas 66208, on Friday, January 19 at 3pm. All those who loved him are welcome to attend, and a livestream will also be available (https://www.villagepres.org/online.html).
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution in Bruce’s honor to Unicef (https://give.unicefusa.org/-/NMAPZQVX) and the KC-based Front Porch Alliance (https://frontporchalliance.org/get-involved/donate), for which Bruce volunteered in his retirement as part of its PALs mentorship program at Faxon Elementary.
