A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., with a visitation prior at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 29th at Community of Christ Church, 12600 Byars Road, Grandview, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to The Kansas City Rose Society or to Kansas City Hospice In Memory of Carla Ann Corwin.
Carla was born February 1, 1942 in Warrensburg, Missouri, the second child of Edward Allen and Alice Browning (Neff) Neal. When Carla was three years old, the small family moved to Grandview, Missouri where she attended school, later graduating from Grandview Senior High School with the Class of 1960. Carla went on to attend Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in 1964.
Carla returned to Grandview and taught her 30 plus year teaching career at High Grove Elementary School, retiring in May, 1997. One of her greatest joys was teaching. She loved her job and students, which showed when she won Teacher of the Year in 1994 and 1997. Carla was known for singing with her kids while playing the guitar.
While raising her two children in Grandview, Carla met Robert Allen Corwin, Jr. and they were united in marriage on March 24, 1978 in Kansas City, Missouri. She would then help raise Bob’s two children as if they were her own. They made their home in Grandview and later Kansas City, Missouri before moving to Lee’s Summit in 1993.
After retiring, Carla spent as much time with her family and friends as possible, which included many weekend trips to their lake home at the Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees in Oklahoma. When she wasn’t at “The Lake,” Carla was an avid gardener and especially loved her hydrangeas and pink gerber daisies in honor of her beloved stepdaughter, Stacey. Carla loved animals and cherished any that ever ventured into her backyard. There was always freshly filled birdfeeders and a pile of carrots for the rabbits. Carla prayed often for many people and was very close to her God. Carla was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and cherished friend to too many to count. We have an abundance of memories that comfort us during this time of grief.
Carla was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Alice Neal, her beloved stepdaughter, Stacey Michelle (Corwin) Blede in 2006, and in 2007, her cherished mother-in-law, Roberta Jean (Hartman) Swigart, whom Carla helped take great care of in her later years. This reunion in Heaven must have been incredible.
Carla is survived by her loving husband of 41 years, Bob Corwin, Jr.; daughter, Missy (Kenny) Toliver of Lee’s Summit, MO; son, Aaron (Misty) Goff of Orlando, FL; stepson, Jeff Corwin of Frisco, TX; son-in-law Mike (Robyn) Blede of Raymore, MO; brother, Mike (Connie) Neal of Peculiar, MO; sister, Terry (Richard) Bluel of Grandview, MO; seven grandchildren, Jake (Alyssa) Toliver of Raymore, MO, Jed (Stephanie) Toliver of Adrian, MO, Taylor and Justin Goff of Orlando, FL, Brady, Jayce, and Kaedyn Blede of Raymore, MO; five great-grandchildren, Daxton, Jenna, Abby, Anna, and Deacon Toliver; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many friends.
Carla will be cremated and, at a later date, travel with her husband and her God and be buried side by side in historic Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence, Kansas.
