

Carmen was born on November 29, 1950 in Kansas City, Missouri to Lucille (Barr) and Robert Watkins. She graduated from Northeast High in 1968 and worked in the GSA as Payroll Supervisor until her retirement. In 1974, she married James Berry, and was a devoted mother to her daughter Michelle (Berry) Oakes, as well as three stepchildren William, Jimmy, and Shelly. In 1990, the family built a home that continues to provide many cherished memories and countless gatherings. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, reading, and spending time with friends and family. The memories she created will continue to shine brightly in the lives of her family and friends. Her life was a testament to love, resilience, and joy.
Carmen was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Lucille Watkins, her sister Judy Gillespie, and brother Aaron Watkins. Carmen leaves behind her younger brother Bernard Watkins and wife Kimberly, daughter Michelle Oakes and husband Christopher, two grandchildren Zachary Oakes and Joshua Oakes, and a wonderful loving collection of extended family and close friends.
A memorial service for Carmen will be held Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO 64131.
