Charley was born March 31, 1927 in Salina, KS, to Noble and Angela (Hergenreder) Maybrier. Upon graduating from Sacred Heart High School in 1945, he joined the Navy and served in World War II. In 1953 he made his final profession as an Oblate for St. Benedict’s Abbey. He left the monastery citing that the only vow he could not uphold would be the vow of silence. He met Patricia Ann Lyons at a singles dance at Redemptorist Church. Charley and Pat were married on May 29, 1954. He started a successful career in banking at Central Bank, Kansas City, first as a teller and became president in 1969. He purchased OK Furniture in 1980 which the family still owns and operates.
Charley was an active member of the parishes to which he belonged: St Charles Borromeo, Our Lady of Good Counsel and St. Patrick. He sang in church choirs, served as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, brought Holy Communion to shut-ins for many years, served as lector, sacristan and altar server.
His Catholic faith was the foundation of his life. In his later years he devoted his time to attending daily Mass, Eucharistic Adoration and praying the Rosary. His dedication to the Blessed Mother led him to make over 75,000 rosaries which were sent around the world.
Charley will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor. He enjoyed sports, especially baseball. Backyard pepper games were the highlight of many family get togethers. He was a golfer, hunter and fisherman. He was a fun and devoted father and he will be greatly missed.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years in 2011, his parents, a grandson, Michael Maybrier, four brothers, Noble, Tom, John and Steve. He is survived by his children, Joe (Linda), John (Theresa), Mari, Steve, Jim (Sarah), Angela Wilson (Brett), Sara Shields (Dave), Susan Baker (Adam), Melissa Melton (Eric) and Amy Medbery (Dwight); a brother, Jim (Laverne), Wichita, KS; sisters, Ellouise Wolfe, Colwich, KS and Mary Rodgers (Ron), Salina, KS; 30 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank those who cared for him the last months of his life at Our Lady of Mercy Country Home, Liberty, MO and NorthCare Hospice House. The family suggests contributions to the Sisters of St Francis of the Holy Eucharist or Priests for Life.
