

Charlotte Maie (Newman) Sweeney, 98, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, April 25th, 10:00 a.m., at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 11822 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO, with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, April 24th, at the church, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., where the Rosary will be prayed at 5:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Little Sisters of the Poor, 8745 James A. Charlotte was born May 17, 1915 in Alton, IL, to Charles and Hildegard Newman. She was one of six children. Charlotte and her family moved to Kansas City. She graduated from Loretta Academy. Charlotte married her husband, Emory John on January 8, 1938 and enjoyed 62 years of marriage. Charlotte was a member of the Ladies of Charity and Seton Center. She and Emory spent many years enjoying the Lake of the Ozarks with family and friends. Charlotte lived at Villa Venture nine years where she was an ambassador. Charlotte was the absolute picture of a lady, always impeccably dressed and perfectly accessorized. Her knack for decorating and floral arranging and her ability to host endless parties were admired by all.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband, Emory John Sweeney, Jr. and her brother, Charles Newman; grandsons, Aaron and Darrin Coppenbarger. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Bill) Morris; son, Emory J. “Jack” Sweeney, III (Meralee); grandchildren, Shannon (Nathan) Sutton, Sloan (Laura) Morris, Shawn (Yvonne) Sweeney, Tanya (Mark) Hoffmeister, Bradley Coppenbarger and Christopher (Shireen) Coppenbarger; and 13 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister, Lillian DeMier, and her brothers, Jack, Donald and Dick (Helen).
Charlotte touched the lives of many people and lit up every room she entered. She lived a long, wonderful life filled with faith, family and friends and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
