Chester was the founder of Lee's Summit Scribes Writers Association. He formerly lived in Lee's Summit, Missouri. He had a thirty year military career in the Army National Guard (Corps of Engineers, Military Police). He retired from Black & Veatch as a contract engineer.
He was preceded in death by his wife Carroll and son Ray. He is survived by his children C. Warren Smith, Mary Pat Medina, Richard E. Smith, Charles F. Smith, Juanita Neri, and stepson Donald C. Hobbs.
