Colette M. Jordan, 87, of Overland Park, was called home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday, February 26, 2011 after a long life of loving and giving. She will always be remembered for her caring nature and her pretty smile. Colette was born in Paris, France on December 7, 1923, daughter of Eugene Robert Kappe, restaurateur, and Marcelle Lucie Mazet. She attended boarding schools when young, and later studied for the nursing profession. During World War II she saw many horrors and eventually became a nurse attached to the U.S. Army. She followed by army as the POWs and slave labor camps were liberated, she took care of them and their needs. There she met a young 2nd Lieutenant Company Commander named Stanford Jordan. Two years later they were married in Rosenheim, Germany on May 17, 1947. The couple sailed to America on the Holbrook on June 18, 1947. Once settled in America, Colette created a warm, loving home for her husband and the three sons that would soon follow. As the boys grew older, Colette would spend her time doing various volunteer work with children, particularly special needs children. For many years she taught children in the Shawnee Mission School District how to speak French and Sunday School to children with special needs. She was eventually honored by George H.W. Bush in Kansas City as one of his 1000 Points of Light for her involvement with the Seniors Serving Schools Program. One of her proudest moments was on May 7, 1968, when after much hard work, she received her American Citizenship at a ceremony in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Colette was always active and in her spare time, loved doing crafts of almost every kind. One of her favorite pastimes was working in her lovely garden. But her greatest joy was working with children. All children! She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was also a devoted wife and is survived by her husband of 63 years, Stanford N. Jordan, of Overland Park; her sons Bruce of Decorah, Iowa, Dick and his wife Christie of Wichita, Kansas, and Dave and his wife Lesli of Overland Park, Kansas. Colette has five grandchildren Brian Jordan, Heather Tignor, Matt Jordan, Rob Jordan, Justin Jordan and five great-grandchildren Audrey, Charlie, Lindsay, Anna, Jacob, and many French cousins. The family would like to express their sincere thanks and deep gratitude to the staff at The Forum of Overland Park and KC Hospice House for their loving, attentive care of Colette. Services will be held on Saturday, March 5th, at 2:00 p.m. at Knox Presbyterian Church, located at 9595 W. 95th Street in Overland Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations are made to: Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, New York 10018 and/or Down’s Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City, 10200 W. 75th Street, Suite 281, Shawnee Mission, Kansas 66204.
