Curtis was born January 22, 1931 at Bell Memorial Hospital (KU Med). He attended Maccochaque Grade School, and Rosedale High, where his father was a Social Studies Teacher. He attended the University of Kansas where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1953. As an undergraduate, he joined ROTC and achieved the rank of Second Lieutenant, USAF, Reserve, receiving his Degree of Bachelor of Laws in 1955. He promptly received a USAF Active Duty Order to report to Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana. He was one of 4 trial lawyers (JAG), where his assignments included over 60 criminal cases representing both Prosecution or Defense. JAG took up his official time, but there was free time to explore Montana with friends.
At a Methodist social gathering, Curtis’s friend pointed out two girls, that were school teachers, and suggested a Sunday afternoon drive to see herds of elk and deer. Getting stuck in minus ten degree weather, it took 6 hours to return the girls safely home. His girl, Marjorie Ann Flor, became his wife, on August 16th, 1956. They moved to Wichita Kansas where Curtis became an Assistant Professor of Business Law, at Wichita State University, modernizing the business law offering to “LAW & SOCIETY.” In 1969 he gained rank of Professor, and was Director for 19 years. In May, 1992 he retired, after 35 Years of Service for the School of Business.
During retirement, he enjoyed traveling with Marge to Europe, China, the Mediterranean, Russia, and his favorite destination Yellowstone/Teton area. Marge and Curtis celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on August 16, 2016.
Marge preceded him in death, November 30th, 2016. Curtis is survived by a sister, Ann Hotz of Garden City, Kansas; children, Richard D. Terflinger of rural Girard, KS, Linda K. Sadler of Kansas City, MO, Janet L. Moran of Leawood, KS; grandchildren, Jason L. Sadler, Kevin D. Sadler, and Rachel N. Moran, all living in the Kansas City area.
Curtis will be buried with Marge at McCune Cemetery in southeast Kansas. The family will have a private graveside service, honoring both Curtis and Marge.
