Beloved daughter, wife, mother and friend, Dana Bickel, was promoted to heaven Tuesday, July 5th. Dana Deane Turner was born May 30, 1934, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Lauren and Pauline Turner. She lived in the Independence area most of her life except for one year spent in San Rafael, California, while her husband was stationed at Fort Baker. Dana attended Northeast High School where she excelled in her classes and graduated a year early. Dana then went on to receive a Business Administration degree from Christian College in Columbia, Missouri. She made a most beautiful spring bride when she wed William “Bill” Bickel, her high school sweetheart, on March 20, 1954. The two went on to celebrate 57 years of marriage together before Bill passed away in 2011. In early life, Dana lived above the Maywood Theater with her parents, Lauren and Pauline Turner, who partly-owned and managed Maywood, The Electric, Englewood, Granada, and The Plaza theaters. Later, all but Maywood Theater were sold, and the theater was transformed into the popular Maywood Bowl. After college, Dana worked for 22 years with her dad as a part-owner/operator of Maywood Bowl. After her father passed, the bowl was sold, and Dana became a caseworker for the Missouri Department of Social Services-Division of Family Services. She spent over 18 years with Family Services, retiring in December of 1999. Dana had a passion for playing bridge with her longtime friends Bev, Carolyn, Darlene, Doris, Fran, Lillian, and Jeff & Marita. She enjoyed the game for close to 50 years. She loved family vacations at the Lake of the Ozarks and in the mountains of Arkansas and Colorado. Dana did many things throughout her life. She was a talented crafter, an avid bowler, a confirmation show dog handler, a dirt-bike motorcycle riding enthusiast, and a bicycle rider. Dana lived a long and blessed life. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and half-sister. She is survived by her son and daughter, Mark and Lauren Bickel, sister-in-law Sondra Mulvihill and husband Mike, and many nieces and nephews. Dana was a proud member of Sheffield Family Life Center, where she was loved by many and affectionately known as “Mama Dana.” The family requests memorial contributions be made to Sheffield Family Life Center, 5700 Winner Road, Kansas City, MO 64127, in remembrance of Dana. A home-going celebration will be held on Friday, July 15, at 2 pm with visitation at 1pm at Floral Hills Funeral Home. Burial to follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
