On October 9, 1943 Dan was born to Roy and Aileen (Finnegan) Fuhrman of Atchison, KS. Dan attended Saint Benedict’s Grade School followed by Maur Hill Prep in Atchison before heading to Kansas State University, the greatest University in all of Kansas.
Dan won the lottery, having met his wife, Donna, in Atchison on February 5, 1966. They wed June 14, 1969 at St. Gabriel Church in St. Louis, MO and settled back in Atchison before moving to Overland Park, KS; eventually settling in their current home in Leawood, KS in 1980.
Dan took extraordinary pride in his work. He started his career in Atchison working for City National Bank. He then moved on to Snowden Mize, honing his sales skills in the pharmaceutical industry. In the early 1970s, Dan was instrumental in overseeing several Snowden Mize owned stores in the brand-new Crown Center retail complex. He was so enamored with the franchise he was selling that he bought his own, growing The Athlete’s Foot to twelve stores in four states before selling them in 1993. Unable to commit to full retirement, he purchased Schutte Lumber Company in 1997. Shortly after, in 1998, the lumberyard and dozens of other businesses along historic Southwest Boulevard were devastated by a flood. This ignited an unmatched passion in Dan to find a solution for the Turkey Creek flooding of Southwest Boulevard. Through the creation of The Bi-State Turkey Creek Association, he worked passionately over the next decade to unite Kansas and Missouri and the Federal government to fund the rehabilitation of Turkey Creek and the tunnel it flows through. The business owners of Southwest Boulevard now sleep easy through rainstorms. He retired in 2014 after having sold the business to his son, Michael.
As an Eagle Scout, Dan endeavored to do his good turn daily by staying involved with various not for profit and charitable organizations including, but not limited to, Church of the Nativity, Maur Hill Prep School, Advice and Aid Pregnancy Center, Blue Hills Country Club, Rockhurst High School, Rockhurst University, Kansas City Industrial Council, Bi-State Turkey Creek Association, and the Central Industrial District Association.
Dan was at his happiest while enjoying hours-long dinners or any time he was in the company of his family and friends. Running, golfing, riding Harleys, hunting with his dogs, floating and skiing in lakes, skiing in Colorado, vacations and cold beer while cheering on the Wildcats, Chiefs and Royals are but a few of the things he enjoyed over his lifetime. Never having met a stranger, Dan was always friendly, outgoing and welcoming. Controversial among his family, he also enjoyed driving around slowly in his little blue Porsche with his cherished dog, Stella, while popping up at friends' houses for a surprise visit. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife, Donna, of their home. Also surviving are his son: Michael (Erin) Fuhrman, Overland Park, KS; daughter: Christine (Tera Cameron) Fuhrman, Louisburg, KS; two grandchildren: Finnegan and Elizabeth Fuhrman; sister: C.J. Dowdell, Leavenworth, KS; nephews: Tim Tinklin and Don Tinklin, both of Roeland Park. Additionally, he was survived by his brother-in-law: Dan (Mary) Halloran; nieces Dede (Dave), Julie (Matt) and nephew Dan (Katie) and several great nieces and nephews all of St. Louis, MO.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Aileen Fuhrman.
