Dan was born in Portsmouth, Iowa on the Feast of Saint Joseph, March 19, 1936. He grew up in Omaha, Nebraska and attended both Creighton Prep School and Creighton University. Dan moved to Los Angeles, California as a young man, where he met and married the love of his life, Patricia Caron. They raised three children among large extended families of siblings, aunts and uncles, and nieces and nephews, emphasizing faith and family above all.
Dan pursued a varied career trajectory, which led him to establish his own successful business, Los Angeles Abrasive Sales, which he operated until his retirement in 2005. He believed that hard work builds character, and as the sole proprietor of a thriving business, he demonstrated his commitment to hard work. He was an extrovert who made friends easily, and small children and dogs loved him. He organized annual salmon fishing trips to Alaska for his groups of friends, and he was a member of the Turf Club at Santa Anita for many years. He loved the annual beach house vacation with the grandkids, and loved taking road trips, especially to visit family members in Henderson, Lemoore, Bend, and McMinnville. Dan and Pat made the decision to move to Leawood, KS in 2018 to be close to their daughter and son-in-law when they needed more assistance after Dan’s diagnosis of dementia.
Daniel is preceded in death by his son Joseph Rosenthal. He is survived by his sister Ella Burgess of Bend, OR, his beloved wife, Patricia Caron Rosenthal, his two daughters, Donna Finley (John) of Austin, TX and Kathleen Macfarlane (Mike) of Leawood, KS, and his daughter-in-law Leeann Rosenthal of Henderson, NV. Dan was the wise grandfather to JD Rosenthal (Stephanie), Josh Rosenthal (Audra), Emily Finley (Matt Popkin), Katie Finley, Erin Finley, Megan Dickson (Aaron), Austin Macfarlane (Caroline), Allie Macfarlane and Ryan Macfarlane. He was the affectionate great-grandfather to Juliette and Aubrey Rosenthal, Olivia Dickson, Henry Popkin and Joey Rosenthal.
A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, July 1 at 10:30 AM, with the Rosary to precede the Mass at 10:00 AM at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Parish in Leawood, Kansas. A reception at the parish hall will follow immediately after the Mass.
