Daphene grew up on a farm in North-Central Missouri and enjoyed playing basketball and singing in the school choir at Malta Bend High School. Following graduation she attended Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, MO and graduated with a degree in elementary education. Her two life-passions were quickly discovered: teaching and finding the love of her life, Orlyn O. Lockard. Daphene and Orlyn were married on December 21st, 1946.
Daphene loved children and her life’s calling was found and fulfilled as she taught many years at Fleetridge Elementary School in Raytown, MO.
Together, Daphene and Orlyn enjoyed gardening, volunteering at Powell Gardens, camping & canoeing, season tickets to the Kansas City symphony, classical music, the Kansas City Royals, and traveling. Their travels included educational experiences in Europe, but their favorite journeys included taking each grandchild on a special trip to the destination of their choice which included a trip west to a Colorado dude ranch and a trip east to Washington, D.C. They were both faithful members of Swope Park Baptist Church in Kansas City and they supported a variety of mission endeavors.
