Sad and shocked to read about this so long afterward. I knew and loved Darrel as a friend and coworker. Never a nicer person have I ever met. Great sadness in my heart today. I have lived in Oklahoma for the past 23 years and only found this story on the internet. The world lost a great friend.

Darrel, you were the love of my life and the very best thing that ever happened to me and I told you often. We talked about if and when one of us would pass and leave the other but I never thought it would be this soon and with the tragedy of your death. My thoughts can't really grasp that your smiling face and your heart of gold are gone from this world. I will love you till the day I die and we meet again but until then the kids and I will do our best to make you proud. Love you to the moon and back........Kathy.

My thoughts and prayers go out to your family during this time of sorrow. God has loving concern for bereaved ones. He will provide your family with peace, strength and lasting comfort. (Psalm 146:5, 9)

I am so saddened by Darrel's passing. The memories of, Darrel and the others who worked at Jess & Jim's Steakhouse are always present in my mind. May the grace of God carry you, his family through this time.

I knew him there and it was pleasure to work with him
May he and his mother rest in eternal peace

Kathy and family, Darrel's infectious smile and gentle demeanor will stay with me forever. I pray you find comfort in memories of your life together.

Kathy, You and your family are in my prayers. Darrel was a great man. I never saw him after school.I never ever heard a crass word spoke about Darrel and i remember seeing you at the Real Estate office back about 1989. May the Lord carry you through this.

I rode the school bus with Kathy every day. She was a sweet girl. I did not know Darrel as well as Kathy, but I know all the things being said about him are so true. I knew Lorene and Bud some time later as she worked in the same salon as I did. She was just a doll and always had a smile. I know where Darrel got it. May God be with all of you, knowing that he is your strength.

Dear Hurst Family,

Words cannot express our sorrow and our hope for your family. Only by Faith can anyone find their way through a horror such as the one you are going through. We do not know you, but are neighbors across the golf course, and know that this could have been any of our families, so our hearts reach out to you in pain that only you can feel. May God's peace sustain and strengthen you, always!

God Bless You!

Linda and Jim, you and your family have my deepest sympathy. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Only G.M. foreman I never heard his voice even raise, let alone a yell. Treated everyone with such kindness, whether it was deserved or not.

Kathy and family. There are no words to express how heartbroken I am for all of you. You remain in my thoughts and prayers. May your close-knit family and memories help you through this tragic time.

In memory of a wonderful son, husband, father, brother, friend. Let his light shine on all of us.

Darrel and I rode the same school bus. I lived at 131st & Wornall; my name was Messmer then. Darrel was always smiling. He was very good looking and athletic but quiet. I was excited to hear when my friend Kathy Stifter married Darrel over 40 years ago now. Kathy and I have known each other since 3rd grade and played together often. We still meet with others we graduated with(Class of '70)for lunch over the past 20 some years. Kathy always spoke of Darrel fondly and you could tell they were still very much in love even after all these years. Darrel may not be here but he lives on in the people whose heart he has touched. My heart aches for what Kathy and her family are going through and all the other victims of this heinous crime. May you find peace. Cheri Messmer/O'Kane/Lipari

I first met Darrel at Martin City Elementary. Over our grade school/junior high years we spent so many hours playing together all over our neighborhood and in the greenhouse behind the Hurst house. In high school sports he gave everything he had, always busting his behind. So many fond memories of a great guy!! I am deeply saddened by his lose of life. My thoughts are with the family.

I only knew Darrel through work at GM. I got there in 95 and he was one of my first foreman down there. I can honestly say he was a great man. We would talk at work about many other things. He was clearly a family man as his stories always reflected. I was shocked when I saw this on the news and am just as shocked today. I send you my condolences in this difficult time in your life, but I am glad that I got to meet him and won't ever forget his name.

Stacey and Family, my deepest condolences for your losses. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. May your loving memories of them both bring you some comfort during this difficult and sad time.

Kathy, We are praying for you and all your family in this time of unimaginable loss. Our oldest son and family are just three blocks away from this tragedy and we will certainly hold tighter to our loved ones, as you must be doing now, trying to make sense of such a terrible loss.
