David Whitaker Broderick, affectionately known as “DB,” passed away peacefully at home in Leawood, Kansas on April 24th at the age of 87, after a short but courageous battle with Leukemia. Born on December 19, 1937 in Kansas City, Missouri and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. David’s life was a vibrant journey marked by love, adventure, a strong entrepreneurial spirit and an unmatched gift for connecting with people.
He attended the University of Colorado and was a member of the Phi Delta Gamma fraternity. He was a talented swimmer who nearly made the Olympic team, but golf captured his heart. David served in the U.S. Army and remained a deeply patriotic man, committed to helping military causes. A devoted Catholic, he found spiritual strength and community at Curé of Ars Catholic Church.
David’s professional life took him across many industries and cities and was anything but ordinary and often ahead of its time. From the automotive world in New York where he met his sweetheart Scottie, to the health club and fitness industry, to working in sales and marketing during the early days of the restaurant franchise boom. Those experiences then led him to the wholesale travel business. As he traveled the world and listened to the needs of his clients, his professional path expanded. He decided to combine travel and entertainment packages encompassing major sporting events like the Masters, The Open, and US Open and in 1982 Broderick Sports Group was born. The combination of his passion for golf, travel and relationship building is what has driven not only a successful business for 43 years, but more importantly, a family business that he was immensely proud of.
He fell in love with Scottie, a fashion model from New York, whom he somehow convinced to relocate to Kansas. He often said that she was the best person he ever met and the best thing that ever happened to him.
David and Scottie shared 52 extraordinary years of marriage, raising four daughters together: Shannon Broderick, Kelly Lee (Rino Poli), Heather Broderick (John Gray), and Keri Wells (Clay Wells). He was a proud grandfather to Alex Broderick, Kate Mannell, and Avery and James Wells. His family was his greatest joy and his proudest accomplishment aka "His Girls". Some of the best memories were entertaining at their house with David’s famous Lemon Chicken paired with his delicious Caesar salad. He even created a blackened seasoning he dubbed Broderick’s Black Magic.
David believed in optimism, in never dwelling on the bad bounce, and always striving for the win win for everyone. He touched so many lives with his generosity, his sense of humor, and his unwavering belief in the good in people.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Paul and Jane Broderick, and his nephew David “Duke” Bebout. He is survived by his sister Kathy Bebout (David Bebout), and their children Suzanne Deering and Broderick Bebout.
A celebration of David’s life will be held at Mission Hills Country Club (5400 Mission Dr. Mission Hills, KS 66208) on Friday, May 30, 2025 from 3pm-6pm. In lieu of flowers, David asked that donations may be made to the Troops First Foundation or an animal charity of your choice.
