He was born in Kansas City, MO on December 1, 1960. He grew up in Kansas City, attending Hickman Mills High School and graduating from Center High School. He graduated from Central Missouri State (UCM) in 1984 with a degree in Communications. In 1989 he was hired on with the FAA and moved to Colorado to begin his career as an Air Traffic Controller. He worked at the Denver Center in Longmont, CO until moving to Overland Park, KS in 1999 when he began working at the Kansas City Center in Olathe, KS. David retired from the FAA on October 31, 2015 after 26 years and 8 months of service to the people of The United States of America and Aviation Safety. The Kansas City Center Crew remember David fondly for his many sayings such as “Bring it on Bud” and “Why don’t you sit down here and be an extra set of eyes” among many others.
David married Joan Marie Ediger on October 7, 1995 and they were blessed with two healthy boys, Nicholas Perry, 19 and Joshua Robert, 16. His greatest joy came from raising them. David loved taking the family on vacations and his favorite places were the Colorado Mountains, Lake of the Ozarks and Branson. As the boys grew, he enjoyed different activities with them. He took great pride in participating in Scouting with them; attending camp with Nick and helping him achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. David and Nick spent time playing golf and tennis together. David and Josh discovered a love for flea marketing and Comic Cons and enjoyed those together. David was an avid golfer. He played in leagues and spent many golf weekends with friends and family. He spoke often about working as a Caddy as a young man and the importance of golf etiquette and playing the game as a gentleman. He was a Boy Scout, achieving the rank of Life Scout and becoming an Honorary Warrior in the Mic-O-Say Indian Tribe as an adult.
He is preceded in death by his father Edward Perry Felling and sister-in-law Elizabeth Betteridge Felling. He is survived by his mother, Beatrice M. Felling, his wife and children, his sisters Kristen Felling, Stephanie Wilkins (Michael), Candace Engert (Tom), Tamra Felling, Megan Felling and brothers, Matthew Felling (Mary) and Andrew Felling (Laura). He is also survived by his wife’s family and many nieces and nephews.
David had so many friends. He enjoyed a long relationship with friends from kindergarten, the neighborhood, Colorado, the Minor Park Golf League, Sycamore, his poker group, Denver and Kansas City Centers, Troop 222 and many more. Words cannot express how grateful he was for all of the love and support he received from them over the last 15 months. We would like to thank St Luke’s Oncology and St Luke’s Home Care and Hospice House for the wonderful care they provided for David.
