David was born on January 30, 1939 to the late Marwood and Mildred (Davis) Konold. David grew up in Kirkwood, MO, where he was a passionate St. Louis Cardinals fan. He spent many happy summers as a boy in Glen Arbor, MI at Camp Leelanau on the Crystal River and Lake Michigan, and later lifeguarding in Kirkwood. David graduated from William Jewell College in 1961 with a degree in history, was a member of the debate team and Chapel Choir, and served as the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity Scholarship Chairman.
After college, David met Phyllis Ryan in church in Chicago, IL and they married in 1963. They remained married for over 40 years and raised five children while living in various cities in the Midwest and West Coast. David worked in sales for Standard Oil, NCR, Deluxe, and Accurate before settling his family in Dousman, WI. He founded Colorforms LLC in 1975, specializing in business forms and commercial printing. He later moved to Manchester, MO and continued to operate Colorforms until his passing. David loved his work and his friendships with clients across the Midwest.
David was a devoted father and grandfather, and an active volunteer in his church in Oconomowoc, WI and Town & Country, MO. He particularly loved his volunteer work reading the Bible at local jails and prisons. David always attended his children’s school and sporting events, was a volunteer coach, and always made time for a call from one of his kids and grandkids. He loved animals and music from a young age and especially enjoyed discussing politics with friends and family. David loved sports and played varsity soccer and football in high school at Principia. He was also an avid sports fan with deep love for the Kansas Jayhawks, St. Louis Cardinals, and his football teams – the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs – often watching a game and talking on the phone to discuss the play-by-play with his children or grandchildren. Wherever his children moved, he cheered on their local teams and loved to share a post-game analysis.
David loved his family and friends and had a compassionate heart, always seeing the good in people, rarely passing by anyone without speaking to them or offering a comment that would brighten their day. He spent the last years of his life socializing with his many friends at The Sorrento in Overland Park, KS, where everyone knew where to find him in his favorite chair at the Clubhouse.
David is survived by his former wife Phyllis Konold; daughter Cynthia (& Mike) Landers; daughter Lisa (& Tom) Mitchell; son David (& Kamille) Konold; son Steve (& Jodie) Konold; daughter Carrie (& Hieu) Konold Ho; and grandchildren Ryan Landers, Porter and Pearson Konold, Lily and Elle Konold, and Raina and Khai Konold Ho.
His family will hold a Celebration of Life in July, 2023 in Glen Arbor, MI and will share details with friends on how to participate virtually. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wayside Waifs, 3901 Martha Truman Road, Kansas City, MO 64137 (https://secure.waysidewaifs.org/site/Donation2); or The Humane Society of the United States, 1255 23rd Street, NW, Suite 450, Washington, DC 20037 (https://www.humanesociety.org/how-you-can-help).
