David Louis Kruse II passed away at his home in Leawood, Kansas on May 20, 2026, following a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. His wife of 60 years, Beth Michele Kruse, was lovingly by his side. He was 82.
Born February 23, 1944, in Frederick, Oklahoma, David was the son of David Louis Kruse Sr. and Jewell (Dugan) Kruse. He moved with his family to Overland Park, Kansas, as a teenager in 1956 and graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School in 1962. At age fifteen, in geometry class, he met Beth Newton, who became the love of his life and his steadfast partner for nearly seven decades. David and Beth were married on May 31, 1966, building a life centered on devotion to family, loyalty, hard work, and enduring love.
David earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kansas in 1967 and later completed a Master of Science degree in Industrial Management from Central Missouri State University while attending night classes and working full time. Following college, he served honorably in the Kansas Army National Guard and the United States Army, including an engineering assignment at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, of which he was especially proud. During this time, he also earned his private pilot’s license, continuing a lifelong fascination with aviation and mechanical systems.
David began his airline career as an aircraft structures engineer with Trans World Airlines in Kansas City in 1967. Over the next eighteen years, he steadily advanced through numerous engineering and operational leadership positions involving aircraft performance, engine operations, reliability systems, and maintenance planning. Colleagues respected him for his technical expertise, calm judgment, integrity, and relentless commitment to safety and operational excellence.
In 1985, he was recruited by American Airlines Chairman Robert Crandall to join American Airlines as Senior Vice President of Maintenance and Engineering. Over the course of a distinguished career, David helped lead and modernize one of the largest and most sophisticated airline maintenance organizations in the world, overseeing major maintenance operations in Tulsa and Fort Worth during a period of significant growth and change within the aviation industry.
Though highly respected throughout aviation circles, David remained at heart an engineer and problem solver — a man more interested in doing things correctly than receiving recognition for them. He was known for his steadiness during times of crisis, his ability to inspire confidence, and his dedication to mentorship of younger engineers and leaders. In recognition of his lasting contributions to engineering and aviation, he was named a Distinguished Mechanical Engineering Alumnus by the University of Kansas School of Engineering in 2008.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, David served in leadership and advisory roles with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa, the Greater Tulsa Chamber of Commerce, and the Tulsa Area United Way.
Outside of work, David found great joy in woodworking, boating at Grand Lake, and repairing nearly anything mechanical — making whatever he fixed work better than when new. He approached hobbies the same way he approached life — with patience, meticulous precision, and pride in doing things well.
Above all else, David was devoted to his family. Though never flamboyant or attention-seeking, he loved deeply and expressed it often through steadfast presence, meaningful encouragement, unwavering support, and genuine pride in those he loved. He was a fiercely loyal husband, brother, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend whose strength, wisdom, humor, and reliability was always a source of stability and comfort to his family, friends, and colleagues.
David was preceded in death by his parents and by his beloved younger brother, James “Jim” Kruse.
He is survived by his wife, Beth Michele (Newton) Kruse of Leawood, Kansas; daughter Julie Kruse Carson and husband Brad R. Carson of Tulsa, Oklahoma; son Dr. William Bradley Kruse and wife Carrie of Mission Hills, Kansas; grandson Jack David Carson; granddaughters Caroline, Kate, and Hattie Kruse; and many friends, associates, and former colleagues whose lives he profoundly affected and influenced over the course of his life.
David devoted his entire life to making sure that those for whom he was responsible made it home safely.
A private family graveside service was held May 29, 2026, at Corinth Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the University of Kansas School of Engineering.
