David W. Stone, 78, Lee’s Summit, MO, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, on October 15, 2014. He was born on February 16, 1936, in Alden, KS, the son of George and Nina Stone. He attended high school in Otis, KS, where he was a star athlete. There he met Mary Ann Kerbs, who was, as he said just last week, “the prettiest girl in the school.” They were married on August 28, 1955. He graduated from Kansas State with a degree in electrical engineering in 1958 and went to work for Bendix (later named Allied-Signal) in Kansas City. He worked in the Metrology department for 35 years, retiring in 1992. In 1969, he was instrumental in the formation of Q Corporation (Derby, KS), a company that serviced the electronics industry.
David was compassionate, generous, curious, and achieved extraordinary accomplishments in his life. He loved his family and they will miss his quick wit and his sense of humor. He was an avid fisherman and a collector of Model A parts, lunch boxes and other interesting treasures. He seemed to have an auto restoration underway at all times, from a 1915 Model T Ford to a 1967 Camaro convertible.
David was a founding member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. He was deeply dedicated to and faithfully served the church community. He served as Building Committee and Finance chairman, sang in the choir, assisted in the backpack ministry for Truman School, and enjoyed sharing his carpentry skills, including building the library shelves and Welcome Center.
He is survived by his wife Mary Ann of the home; two daughters, Carma (Glenn) Gibler of Houston, TX, and Valoree (Marc) Schrank of Warwick, RI; two brothers, Jim (Chris) Stone of Tucson, AZ, and John (Susan) Stone of Wichita, KS; Four grandchildren, Michelle Schrank of Brooklyn, NY, Aaron Schrank of Warwick, RI, Hayley Gibler and Grace Gibler of Houston, TX, and several nieces and nephews. David was preceded in death by his sister, Kathryn Hackler.
Visitation will be Sunday, October 19, 2014, from 5-7 pm at Floral Hills Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 11 am, Monday, October 20, 2014, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 9420 James A.
