Deborah Diane Hanly was a caring and devoted wife, daughter, mother, sister, step-grandmother, and friend to many. She left this world, unexpectedly, in the early morning hours of Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at the age of 74 after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer.
She was the first-born child to her loving parents, Juanita and Ray Kraus on August 13, 1949 in Kansas City, Missouri. After graduating from Southeast High School, Deborah worked briefly as a carhop at Sidney’s Drive-in before starting her lifelong career at the Richard Bolling Federal Building working for the Social Security Administration as a keypunch operator. She worked several positions there during her 35+ years of service, finally retiring as an administrative assistant for SSA’s Disability Quality Branch in 2002.
To say that Deborah cared about and adored animals would be an understatement. She had a huge heart and throughout her life, she took in several cats and dogs that needed good homes. While raising her child, Derek, she often couldn't find a way to say "no" to herself or to him when a lost stray cat or dog would cross their paths, and that animal would quickly become a beloved addition to the Hanly family. She would also go out of her way to care for and feed the many stray cats in her neighborhood… as well as all the birds, squirrels, deer, rabbits, and any other animal that would be lucky enough to find its way to her. She was an avid member of the ASPCA and also supported many other animal charities.
Deborah was also quite the food and sweets connoisseur. She and her husband of 25 years, Peter, would often go out with friends and family to enjoy a delicious meal at one of their favorite restaurants. They loved frequenting Red Lobster, Texas Roadhouse, and Dixon’s Chili for all-you-can-eat tacos. She also loved strolling through the local farmers market in search of the perfect cantaloupe or a craft fair searching for unique crafts and collectibles.
Her mother-Juanita, father-Ray and brother-David preceded her in death, and she leaves behind her husband-Peter Castronuovo, a son-Derek, a stepdaughter-Angela Faught, and two beloved fur babies-Rocky and Boomer, along with several cousins, nieces/nephews, and step grand-daughters.
