Born on May 17, 1929, in Kansas City, MO, Delta was the eldest of three daughters born to Robert Parker Blackburn and Mary Elizabeth (Watson) Blackburn. She was also the granddaughter of Leroy French Blackburn, who served as Superintendent of Jackson County schools for 31 years and whose name is honored by Blackburn Elementary School in Independence, MO. Delta grew up in Independence, MO, and graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1947.
On August 28, 1949, Delta married Jack Larsen. Their 29 years together were filled with love until Jack’s passing in 1978. As a dedicated homemaker and devoted mother, Delta was deeply involved in her children’s lives and school activities. She served as PTA president for several years.
Delta shared a strong bond with her husband, Jack, who was born to Danish immigrants. Together, they visited Denmark twice, where Delta developed a deep love and appreciation for the country, its culture, and Jack's extended family. During her lifetime, Delta wrote many poems, including several that fondly recalled her trips to Denmark.
Known for her patriotism, Delta served as an election judge for many years, reflecting her pride in her country. She delighted in celebrating holidays, especially the Fourth of July and Christmas. On the Fourth, she reveled in the red, white and blue, fireworks and the rousing marches of John Philip Sousa. Her love for Christmas was apparent in her home, adorned with festive Christmas decorations, many of which remained on display year-round. Delta’s warmth and hospitality were evident in the countless dinners and celebrations she hosted for her family.
As a lifelong member of First Christian Church of Independence, MO, Delta dedicated her time and talents over many years, managing floral purchases for weekly services and memorials, as well as decorating for holidays and special occasions. Her natural gift for floral arranging often led her to supplement with flowers from her own garden and other personal adornments. Church and family members were amazed that many of the beautiful and bountiful arrangements she created originated entirely from her small backyard garden.
Delta was also preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Mary Lee Vader and Joan Marie Harris; and son, James Michael Larsen.
To cherish her memory, she leaves daughters, Kathleen Larsen and Tambi Larsen-Bauman; daughter-in-law, Gwen Larsen; grandchildren, Brandon Vogts, Brittany Bauman White (Russell), Jacob Bauman (Kyla Bleibaum), Michelle Goodin Grasso, Shane Goodin (Tabitha); six great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
