

Doral Hammond, 90, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2012 at the John Knox Village Care Center. A World War II veteran, he was born May 5, 1922 in Ozark, Missouri. Doral served on several ships as a Boatswain’s Mate in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was honorably discharged in February 1946 after the end of the war. Having been raised in Springfield, Missouri, his military service gave him his first exposure to the ocean where he developed a lifelong attraction. After his discharge he worked with several oil exploration companies resulting in the family moving to many different locations within the United States. In 1958, he joined the Army Corps of Engineers and worked in various management positions there until his retirement in 1984. Doral and his wife of 64 years, Mildred “Mickey” Hammond loved to travel and play golf and they often combined the two. Doral, an only child, was preceded in death by his parents Everett J. Hammond and Lillie I. Bilyeu Hammond, and by his wife. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Trudy and Don Appleby of Harrisonville; a son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Linda Hammond of Kansas City, Missouri; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Angela and Jerry Crisler and great-granddaughter, McKenna Crisler of Blue Springs. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews by marriage. Cremation. A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
