Doris Dean (Gabriel) Lange, 91, of South Kansas City, MO returned to her heavenly home on September 25, 2016 after a valiant battle with a Parkinson’s. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported her in her struggle and ultimately gave her peace.
Doris was born to the late Alvin and Lillian (Milburn) Gabriel, a farmer and a homemaker respectively, in Douglas County, Eudora Township on February 13, 1925. She graduated from Eudora High School in 1942. After graduating from high School she supported the war effort by working at the Sunflower Ammunition Plant during summer breaks. Doris graduated from Baker University in 1947 with a degree in Business. Doris received her Master’s Degree in Education, (Reading Specialist) from Emporia State University.
Doris was blessed with a large and loving family. She was the oldest of five children. She is survived by three siblings: Galen (Sandy)Gabriel of Macon, Missouri; Margaret (Charles) Hodges of Lawrence, Kansas, and Robert (Dee) Gabriel of Eudora, Kansas.
She was a lifelong member in the Methodist Church. She was a member of Eudora United Methodist Church, First Methodist Church in Leavenworth, Randolph Methodist Church and has been a member of Asbury United Methodist Church since April of 1964.
She was a teacher at Shawanoe Elementary in Shawnee Mission, where she would teach for 17 years until her retirement in May of 1986. Doris was a member and president of Alpha Delta Kappa, an International Honorary Organization for Women Educators.
She married Robert A. Lange, Jr. and fellow Baker graduate on August 22, 1947 at Baldwin United Methodist Church in Baldwin City, Kansas. Doris and Bob were married for 53 years, until Bob’s passing in 2001.
Doris is survived by three of her children, Janice Rivera; Ed and Judy Colson; Dave and Kathy Lange and her grandchildren: Alex Rivera, Jennie Rivera, Amanda & Chad Williams, Ed & Alecia Colson, Danny Lange & Kayla Ippolito, Bobby Lange, Katelyn Lange and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son, Donald Robert Lange; her husband, "Bob" Robert A. Lange, Jr.; and brother Gayle Gabriel.
The visitation will be on Friday, September 30, 2016 at Mt. Moriah, Newcomber and Freeman Funeral home at 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131 at 10:00 AM with a celebration of life following at 11:00 AM. Doris will be interred next to her beloved husband and devoted son at the Mt. Muncie Cemetery in Lansing, KS. Memorial Donations may be made to Baker Univeristy, P.O. Box 65, Baldwin City, KS 66006
