Douglas Nicholas Blauvelt passed away on Sunday, January 16th, 2022 at the age of 95. He is survived by four of five children: David John, Janet Ivy, Richard Douglas and Thomas Andrew, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his wife Catherine Henrietta ( Acker) and daughter Sarah Catherine. Doug was a World War II veteran: U.S. Navy - Fireman second class and served on the USS Tolman DM28, (a minesweeper), in the Pacific theater.
Doug was an architectural specifications writer for 36 years in both New York and Chicago. When he returned from the war, he started work at the New York Central Railroad in Manhattan, where he met his first wife and the mother of his five children, Catherine Henrietta (Acker).
Doug was a member of the Trinity Anglican Church, Prairie Village, KS and was active in the Episcopalian church for most of his life. Doug was a Lay Reader, Junior and Senior Warden and visited nursing homes in the Chicago area.
A life-long train buff, he loved to talk about trains, transit and had two HO scale train layouts focusing on the New York Central Railroad. He was also a Cleveland Indians fan because of his admiration for pitcher Bob Feller whose 18 year career was an inspiration to him. Dad wrote to the Philadelphia Athletics asking if he could try try out for the team before he went off to war. He received a kind letter from Connie Mack, the Athletics president, declining his request but wishing him well.
A memorial service is scheduled for Friday January 28, 2022; 11:00 AM at Trinity Anglican Church, 3920 W. 63rd St. Prairie Village, KS 66208
Internment following service at 12:30 PM at Forest Hills and Calvary Cemetery, 6901 Troost Kansas City, MO 64131.
