Duane was born August 29th, 1942, the first of four children of Buel and Golda (Simmons) McCain. He grew up in Urbana, Missouri, and went to Jameson School in Hickory County until his family moved to Kansas City when he was in 4th grade. In Kansas City, he attended McCoy School in 4th-7th grade and went to East High School from 8th grade until he graduated in 1960. As a kid, he remembered trapping, hunting, and fishing, and often told the story of catching snakes and taking them to school in his pocket to sell for a nickel each. He was also in 4-H and raised a prized heifer that he got to walk down the street in a parade. He achieved the highest honor in Boy Scouts of being an Eagle Scout. He and his family attended Centropolis Baptist Church in Kansas City where he met and married Lois Jean DeMoss. He and Lois both were involved in multiple ministries at Centropolis. He began employment at Milgram’s grocery in 1958 at the age of 16, cleaning and polishing the floors, and worked his way up to store manager, managing several different groceries in the KC area. After the closing of his last store, he worked for Wetterau and finally at Metro Park Warehouse as a warehouse manager before retiring in 2004.
Duane and Lois were married August 30th, 1963. They welcomed daughter Pamela Jean in 1967 and son Darrell Scott in 1969. They celebrated 57 years of marriage before Lois passed in 2021. Their life together revolved around family and church. Eventually, they made their way to Solid Rock Bible Church (formerly Avondale Baptist Church) where Duane served as a deacon, a Sunday School teacher and was often on stage either leading in prayer or singing in a quartet. Together, Duane and Lois also served as Awana leaders, and went on several mission trips with the church. He attended multiple men’s retreats and ranch trips. They took early retirement to spend more time with their grandkids. They enjoyed small trips and playing games and cards with friends and family. They were always together and Duane was heartbroken when she passed. After her passing, Duane found comfort and healing by spending time with companion Donna Soehlig, Doyle and Heizel Donovan, in addition to many other good travel buddies, as well as being the “neighborhood grandpa”.
Duane was preceded in death by his loving wife Lois McCain, parents Buel and Golda McCain, and his sister and brother-in-law Velva and George Zvirgzdins. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Pam and Galen Brannon, son and daughter-in-law Darrell and Dana McCain, and grandchildren Kaitlyn Wheeler (husband Jacob), Hannah McCain (fiance Alex Naylor), Caleb McCain (wife Bianca), Andrew Brannon (wife Ainslea), and Aaron Brannon. Also surviving are great grandchildren Maya and Maverick McCain and Baby Brannon expected March 2027 as well as brother-in-law and sister-in-law Larry and Jane DeMoss, brothers David McCain (Mel), Donald McCain (Sharon), many nieces and nephews and a never ending list of friends.
Duane was a servant of God, a phenomenal husband, dad and grandpa, a friend to many, and admired by all who knew him. As one commenter put it, “Heaven has gained a treasure”.
