

Earl William Schafer, 92, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away peacefully March 9, 2013 at KU Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born November 1, 1920 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Edith Louise (Frogge) and Earl Mathias Schafer. Earl was a graduate of Westport High School in Kansas City, Missouri. He was also a college graduate of Kemper Military School, Booneville, Missouri. Earl loved playing sports including football, baseball, weightlifting and boxing. He won the title for the Golden Gloves championship in the middle weight division in 1941. Earl joined the Navy during WWII and spent three years on a U.S. Navy mine sweeper as a signalman and Chief Petty Officer. He was part of the Naval Armada on D Day in Normandy. He also participated in the invasion of Southern France in the Mediterranean. Earl married his best friend and love of his life, Marjorie Ellen Golding, October 16, 1959 and together they formed Schafer Oil Company, Inc., an automotive chemical supplier, which they operated for over 50 years. He was a Mason. Earl was a member of the Ararat Shrine and its Million Dollar Patrol. Earl is a member of Kansas City Court 54, Royal Order of Jesters. Earl was preceded in death by his parents and two grandsons: Jeffrey and Brady Smith. He is survived by his wife of 52 plus years, Marge; two daughters: Susan Quinn (Shaun) and Pamela Faustlin (Norm) and four grandchildren: Andy Quinn, Alex Quinn, Cristina Quinn, Charlotte Quinn and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013 followed by an 11:00 a.m. memorial service at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri, 64131. A Royal Order of Jesters rose ceremony will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Ararat Shrine Telemedicine Unit, 5100 Ararat Drive, Kansas City, Missouri, 64129.
