Edwin Lee Margrave, 82, Kansas City, Missouri, passed away April 23, 2014. He was born January 2, 1932 in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Raymond E. and Dorothy F. (Olmstead) Margrave. He was a 1951 graduate of Paseo High School.
He served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War on the USS Dextrous (AM-341), an Auk-class minesweeper. While on the Dextrous he made a far Eastern cruise from 3 March 1951 to 28 February 1952. The ship patrolled and swept on both coasts of Korea. Often under fire from shore batteries which hit the Dextrous three times, the Dextrous captured two sampans and five prisoners-of-war. He was a Yeoman and manned the 3 inch gun. He would tell “I might have been a clerk in the Navy but I had a good hole punch.” Ed was proud of his service and liked to share his Navy experiences.
He had worked in the finance and banking industry, retiring from the Quik Trip Corp. as managing officer in 1997. He was known as “Uncle Ed” to family, friends and co-workers. While working nights and managing a large number of Quick Trip stores in the Kansas City area, employees related to him as “Uncle Ed.” Tom Margrave tells it was fun to go into a store and ask if they had seen “Uncle Ed” and the clerk would think he was just another Quick Trip employee. Then, when explained he was his real nephew they would laugh and say they were all his nieces and nephews.
He has a huge heart for dogs, especially those needing a good home. He owned and loved a number of rescue dogs over the years, including a dog he had shipped home from the Philippines when he returned home from the Navy. Each dog held a special place in his heart. One dog, Rockie was his co-pilot and rode in the car every night as he made his nightly travels to the Quick Trip stores. Red, his surviving dog best friend was at his side when he passed away.
He is survived by his brother, Lawrence R. Margrave (Marilyn) of Raymore, Missouri; nephew Thomas M. Margrave (Andrea) of Chesapeake, Virginia; niece Patricia L. Corkran (Scott) of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; Great-nieces and nephews Tyler Corkran, Katie Corkran, Grace Margrave, Abigail Margrave, Henry Margrave, Amelia Margrave and Annabelle Margrave; special friends, Denise and Jamie Marchesano of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and cousins and friends.
Uncle Ed will be missed. We find comfort in knowing he is in God's hands now.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday April 28, at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Homes Road. Burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
