Elizabeth “Betsy” Beckett Vohs was the first child born to Ted and Daysie Beckett. She had two brothers, Ted and Bill, and two sisters, Lynn and Anne. The family relocated from Waldo to South Kansas City when Betsy was a teenager.
Betsy earned her BA at Stephens College and her MA at UMKC. She began her elementary teaching career at Kansas City Public Schools, then transferred to the Turner School District, and finished her career as an elementary art teacher in Paola. Betsy was the first full time elementary art teacher in Paola and was beloved there as a teacher who made art fun for all children.
Betsy married Tom Vohs in 1981. The couple had two sons and were blessed with three grandchildren. Betsy’s sons and grandchildren inspired her to continue battling against serious medical challenges and brightened her outlook every time she was with them.
After Betsy and Tom moved to Paola they joined the First United Presbyterian Church. She was selected as an elder and was known for helping those with disabilities. Upon relocating to Shawnee, Betsy returned to The Kirk of Kansas City where she joined her father and sister in worship followed by lunch that featured laughter and fellowship.
Betsy was a self-taught artist who specialized in watercolors and collages. Her portraits and depictions of flowers were especially vivid. An accomplished gardener, Betsy’s gardens were often featured on the Paola Garden Tour.
The family would like to give special thanks to the nursing staff of the Cardio-Pulminary unit on the fifth floor of Advent Health – Shawnee Mission. Their care for Betsy was uniquely kind and empathetic.
Betsy was a soft-spoken, caring person who loved her family and focused on teaching children and helping others. We miss her so much.
