Ellen was born December 1, 1940 in Louisville, KY, to Anthony and Mary Wimberg. She attended elementary and high school in Louisville and college at St. Louis University where she graduated with a degree in Physical Therapy.
Ellen married Ron Meyer (Captain, retired, KCFD) on April 20, 1963. Together they raised 5 children: Mark Meyer, Captain, KCFD (Margie); Paul Meyer (Kala); John Meyer, Captain, KCFD (Suzann); Luke Meyer (Karen); and Laura Zongker (Sean). Through their children, Ellen and Ron were blessed with 12 grandchildren (Jennifer Clark, Ben Clark, Liz Meyer, Delaney Meyer, Christopher (Topper) Meyer, Daniel Meyer, Andrew Meyer, Dennis Meyer, George Meyer, Allison Meyer, William Zongker and Gray Zongker as well as 2 great grandchildren, Kaylee Clark and Isabelle Clark.
Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, but is survived by her siblings: Mickey Scheetz (Jim), Denny Wimberg (Tricia) and Tom Wimberg (Nancy), as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.
Ellen’s greatest joy was her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a walking encyclopedia when it came to child-rearing. Her daughters-in-law sought her advice with their own newborns, referring to her as the “Baby Whisperer” who always came up with a solution to any situation. Somehow, Ellen found time to enjoy her hobbies of cake decorating, sewing, reading and volunteering when she wasn’t working and taking care of a home with 5 kids, and she shared her love of these activities with her children. She must have made a strong impression on them because every one of them has followed her example of service to others through either a healthcare or firefighting career.
Ellen will be sorely missed by her family and all who knew and loved her. She used to tell her children, “We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it”. Ellen has now made her crossing, but we know she’s just waiting for us on the other side (probably with two powdered sugar donuts – one for each hand).
To honor Ellen’s passions – children and service to others – the family suggests donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl., Memphis, TN 38105, in lieu of flowers.
